Cut 'n Sew
The Goal
Introduction to Cut 'n Sew with DesignaKnit
Cut 'n Sew Options
It's STILL a stitch pattern
New in DAK 9 (Jacquard)
Cut 'n Sew and Textured Stitches
The Rules
Create "fabric" with your knitting machine, then shape your garment pieces with a technique called Cut 'n Sew.
You can simply lay sewing patterns on the fabric and treat it like any other sewing project.
But DesignaKnit can produce knitting instructions that you can download to your electronic machine that will create outlines in your knitting that you can use to cut out the shaping. For example, instead of knitting a rectangular piece, you will knit in pattern and DAK will interrupt the stitch pattern so you can clearly see the outline of the neckline to use for Cut 'n Sew.
Using Cut 'n Sew eliminates the need to work both sides of the neckline separately, stopping and starting the stitch pattern.
This feature is best used with Intarsia, Fairisle or Jacquard stitch patterns. It uses the different colors in the stitch pattern to create the outlines.
Textured stitch patterns like knit, purl tuck and slip can also be used for cut 'n sew with some knitting considerations.

The Rules
Let's review some "rules" of working with Cut 'n Sew.
These are "rules" for working with Stitch Designer, but they come into play when converting a stitch pattern to Cut 'n Sew and can create messages that prevent you from using the Cut and Sew feature.
There can only be 1 selecting needle on each row

For Fairisle: There can only be one color on each row
Use Yarn Symbols to identify similar colors

When assigning colors for Cut 'n Sew,
you need to make sure the palette is set up correctly and the appropriate colors are being selected for the Cut 'n Sew outlines
Once you've identified the problematic rows, you can easily correct the color issue and create your knitting instructions.

In this Fairisle design, DAK is warning that there are more than 2 colors in the row. But it appears there are only 2 colors in the design.
Assigning and displaying YARN SYMBOLS makes the error message more clear. Even though the 2 yellows are the same, DAK thinks they are different colors.
In addition to the Yarn Symbols, using the Check Function will highlight the rows with errors
Once you've identified the problematic rows, you can easily correct the color issue and create your knitting instructions.
