About Stitch Designer
The Goal

DesignaKnit STITCH DESIGNER allows you to graphically create stitch patterns for your knitting.
Master the techniques and you will no longer be limited to the punchcards that came with your machine or the built-in stitch patterns in your electronic machine.
- Create your own designs
- Copy designs you find in vintage books or hand knitting patterns
- Modify a huge library of existing patterns
This is not just charting software.
DesignaKnit was created for machine knitters, so it "understands" the requirements of machine knitting
This makes it easier for you to create stitch patterns for the various stitch techniques; fairisle, tuck, slip, etc.
It has built-in intelligence to help you be successful in creating your own stitch patterns.
In addition, you can "integrate" stitch patterns with garment designs. For example, place a single motif in the center of a sweater. Position it precisely for your stitch and row gauge without guesswork.DesignaKnit was created for machine knitters, so it "understands" the requirements of machine knitting

About Stitch Designer
What is a Stitch Pattern?
For machine knitters, a stitch pattern is a series of instructions for your knitting machine that controls the position of the needles.
As you knit, the position of the needles is controlled by the buttons and levers on the carriage (cam) to form stitch patterns.
For example:
- If you've told DAK that you are using a 24 stitch punchcard machine and try to print a design that is 50 stitches wide, DesignaKnit will warn you and remind you that this stitch pattern will not work for your machine.
- If you try to place a row of tuck stitches side by side, DesignaKnit will remind you that you need to change this.
- If you create a stitch pattern with more than 2 colors and and haven't identified a color changer, DAK will warn you.
Are you starting to glimpse the power of the software?
*You can use DesignaKnit to create stitch patterns for hand knitting or for manually manipulating stitches on the machine. The actual design and editing of stitch patterns would be the same, but the focus of this course is automatic patterning on the knitting machineCreating Stitch Patterns
To graphically design stitch patterns in DesignaKnit, you will work in a gridded workspace.
You will "draw" the design on this grid.
With over 40 tools at your disposal, it's easy to get overwhelmed at first, but think of all the tools as pencils, markers and erasers. Many of the tools are designed to eliminate tedious repetition.
Using your markers you can draw in color or you can draw with stitch symbols. Show the workspace in either format.
Once you have your design created, you can print a punchcard template to punch or download the design to your electronic machine.
This is great for overall stitch patterns. But what if you only want a portion of the design to be used for your garment? Maybe you want to put name on a kids hat, or put a single motif on the front of a sweater, or add a a decorative border at the hem of a tunic. By using the Integrate feature of Stitch Designer you can easily do this. Position the stitch pattern precisely, based on your stitch and row gauge. Plan for stitch multiples so the design matches at the side seams .... all of this using the tools in your Stitch Designer Toolbox.

About Stitch Designer
Requirements
- DesignaKnit 8 or 9* installed and running on your computer
- A basic understanding of file structures on your computer using File Explorer or Windows Explorer Locating, saving and organizing files on your computer is outside the scope of this course
- An understanding of the 5 modules available in DesignaKnit. This course will primarily use Stitch designer, but will also:
- Use a file from Standard Garment Styling
- Integrate a stitch pattern in Original Pattern Drafting
- Use Graphic Studio to create a stitch pattern from an image
- Demonstrate stitch patterns in Interactive Knitting
*This course will demonstrate using DesignaKnit version 9, but the concepts are the same in both versions. Any DAK 9 changes will be identified
About Stitch Designer
Explore Existing Stitch Patterns
Included with both DesignaKnit 8 and 9 are collections of stitch patterns from vintage pattern books. You may be familiar with the Stitch World books that were published by Brother and included with their machines.
Many of the patterns are "ready-made" for your knitting machine and are interchangeable.
But keep in mind the stitch counts of the patterns. If you are using a punchcard machine, you will be limited to the size of your punchcard. Most commonly punchcard patterns are 24 stitch. So you'll need to look for patterns that with stitch multiples of 4-8-16 or 24 stitches. Be aware that some electronic machines have memory limitations and not all stitch patterns in the collection may be usable with your machine.
For this course, we will concentrate on 24 stitch repeat patterns.

DAK 9 thumbnail search by number of stitches
2 ways of opening existing patterns
Open a file (*stp,*pat, *dat formats)

Navigate your computer using File Explorer or Windows Explorer and locate the desired file.
Depending on your DesignaKnit program installation, these files may be located in folder: Users >{name} >Documents > DesignaKnit 8/9
Thumbnails (an easier way)
Small thumbnail previews make it easier to locate files.
DesignaKnit 9 now displays Stitch World Thumbnails in colors matching the Stitch World Books (instead of just black and white)

Use 'Search' to locate Files
Often overlooked, the 'Search' Feature is very useful when presented with hundreds of stitch pattern files.
- Find punchcard-ready designs with the "Pattern size - max rows" option
- List recently-used files with the "Date Last Saved" option
- DAK 9 added more search options
