Original Pattern Drafting and the LK150
The Goal:
This isn’t about learning how to use Original Pattern Drafting from scratch - we cover that in Original Pattern Drafting 101.
The Marriage between Standard Garment Styling and Original Pattern Drafting
Integrate Stitch Patterns
Interactive Knitting
By the end of this module, you’ll understand how OPD fits into your DesignaKnit journey, how to bring in your existing designs, and how to expand them in exciting ways.
You're ready to shape your own path — let’s explore what's possible!

Why use Original pattern Drafting?
When to Move Beyond Standard Garment Styling
You’ve styled a custom garment in Standard Garment Styling — but what if your vision calls for something Standard Garment Styling can’t quite do?
Original Pattern Drafting (OPD) picks up where Standard Garment Styling leaves off. It gives you pixel-level control over each garment piece, just like a CAD (computer-aided Design) system. You can click and drag points, reshape curves, and build entirely new silhouettes from the pieces you already designed.
PLUS you can integrate stitch patterns using Original pattern Drafting to position stich patterns on your pieces exactly where you want them
Modify, Don't Start Over
Although you can, you don’t need to draft from scratch. One of the most practical ways to use OPD is to open your SGS garment in Original Pattern Drafting. You’ll see all your garment pieces on the workspace — ready to refine.
- Curve the front edges of jackets or cardigans
- Split pieces into panels for design or colorwork
- Rotate pieces to plan sideways or bias knitting
- Adjust outlines while keeping seams and sleeve caps intact
Plus, Original Pattern Drafting Adds Powerful Tools:
- Background Image: trace garment outlines from sketches or scanned patterns
- Bezier Curves: draw smooth curves for necklines, hems, and sleeves
- Construct a Slope: define shaping instructions (e.g., "dec 1, knit 3 rows, repeat")
- Overlap & Merge Pieces: combine shapes to design new silhouettes
- Build New Shapes: start with polygons, circles, or custom templates
- Align & Distribute Points: control point placement with precision
Use Standard Garment Styling as your base. Use Original Pattern Drafting to make it your own.
